This infection is caused by one of the viruses in the herpes family and can be type 1 or type 2. Type 1 is the one that produces oral ulcers (also called cold sores) and type 2 is the cause of genital lesions.
Many people with herpes don't know they have it, either because they haven't developed any symptoms or because they are so mild that they have barely noticed it.
The typical symptoms of Herpes, both type 1 and type 2, are usually blister-like "sores," which over time end up leaving very painful and bothersome wounds.
This viral infection can cause relapses, especially in the first year after infection, with milder and less painful symptoms. Unfortunately, these relapses can continue to occur over the years, becoming less severe with each relapse.
It's important not to confuse herpes lesions with those of syphilis. One of the main differences is that syphilis causes sores that are usually painless to the touch, while herpes lesions are painful.
Primary Herpes: Appears shortly after sexual contact (frequently within a week) and its symptoms are usually quite rapid, with multiple blisters appearing, which over the course of several days will become ulcerated and very painful.
Secondary Herpes: This appears after we have had herpes in the past; that is, a relapse. The lesions are usually less numerous, and the infection lasts for a shorter time on our skin.
Herpes Treatment: There is no treatment that cures herpes, but there are palliative treatments in the form of creams or oral medications that will help prevent or reduce the duration of outbreaks.
