What is hepatitis?

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that can be caused by viral infections, excessive alcohol consumption, medications, or autoimmune diseases. Viral hepatitis, such as hepatitis A, B, and C, is the most common and can have serious consequences if not diagnosed and treated promptly.

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis B

It can cause a moderate condition that lasts a few weeks, or it can develop into a serious, lifelong condition.

It's a much more common disease than people realize, and it's highly contagious. This is because the Hepatitis B virus is very resistant and virulent, and can live outside the body for several days.

Hepatitis C

It is not considered a sexually transmitted infection since it is transmitted through blood. However, in cases of traumatic sexual intercourse or with fresh wounds, transmission should not be ruled out. In Spain, approximately 5% of diagnosed cases of Hepatitis C have been due to sexual contact, especially in cases of anal sex or the sharing of sexual organs.

Like Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C can also become chronic and lead to liver diseases such as possible cancer.

The viral load of Hepatitis C usually increases a few days after risky contact, and that is why our PCR test can detect it in a very short period of time.

Currently there is no early vaccine for Hepatitis C, but there are drugs for its treatment.

Important considerations

Vaccination

Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent hepatitis A and B. The hepatitis A vaccine is especially recommended for people traveling to at-risk areas.

The hepatitis B vaccine is part of the childhood vaccination schedule in many countries and is also recommended for adults at risk.

Side effects

• Frequent hand washing, especially after using the toilet and before eating, to prevent the transmission of hepatitis A and E.

• Avoid sharing needles or injection equipment to prevent hepatitis B, C, and D.

Regular monitoring

People with a history of hepatitis or risk factors (such as sharing needles or having unprotected sex) should get regular tests to detect the infection early.
