Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. It primarily affects the genital tract, although it can also affect the urethra in men. In many cases, infected individuals do not experience symptoms but can still transmit the parasite.
Most people with trichomoniasis have no signs or symptoms. However, symptoms can develop over time. When signs and symptoms do appear, they differ between men and women.
In women, the signs and symptoms of trichomoniasis include the following:
In men, trichomoniasis rarely causes symptoms. However, when symptoms do appear, they are usually the following:
Trichomoniasis Treatment
Trichomoniasis treatment requires an oral antibiotic that is effective against the infections caused by this parasite. Treatment can be done during pregnancy. It consists of a megadose (large dose) or several doses (usually twice a day for seven days). To help completely clear the infection, you must continue taking this medication for the entire prescribed course, even if you start to feel better after a few days. If you stop taking it too soon, the infection may not be completely cured.
All sexual partners require treatment at the same time. This prevents immediate reinfection. You should also avoid sexual intercourse until the treatment is complete and all symptoms have disappeared. Symptoms often clear up within a week of finishing the last dose of antibiotics. Report any ongoing symptoms immediately after treatment.
The trichomoniasis test will be repeated after treatment to check if the infection has cleared and if you have not become infected again.
Even if you have already received treatment to eliminate trichomoniasis, you can become infected again if you are in contact with someone who is infected.
