What is Trichomoniasis?

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. It primarily affects the genital tract, although it can also affect the urethra in men. In many cases, infected individuals do not experience symptoms but can still transmit the parasite.

Symptoms of Trichomoniasis

Most people with trichomoniasis have no signs or symptoms. However, symptoms can develop over time. When signs and symptoms do appear, they differ between men and women.

In women, the signs and symptoms of trichomoniasis include the following:

  • A copious amount of thin, often foul-smelling vaginal discharge, which may be clear, white, gray, yellow, or green.
  • Redness, burning, and itching in the genitals
  • Pain when urinating or during sexual intercourse
  • Discomfort in the lower part of the stomach

In men, trichomoniasis rarely causes symptoms. However, when symptoms do appear, they are usually the following:

  • Itching or irritation inside the penis
  • Burning sensation when urinating or after ejaculating

Important considerations

Use of condoms

The correct use of condoms during sexual intercourse is the most effective way to prevent trichomoniasis and other STIs.

Avoid multiple sexual partners

Limiting the number of sexual partners and having monogamous sex with a partner who is not infected reduces the risk of contracting trichomoniasis.

Regular STI checkups

Getting tested regularly for STIs is essential, especially if you have a new sexual partner or are having unprotected sex.
