Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications, but it is treatable with antibiotics.
Gonorrhea is transmitted directly, meaning it can be transmitted during sexual intercourse (vaginal, anal or oral) or from mother to fetus during pregnancy.
In Europe, it is the second most diagnosed STI after chlamydia in sexually active people between the ages of 15 and 29. The probability of having contracted gonorrhea (whether through vaginal, oral, or anal sex) is up to 60%.
Gonorrhea infection is one of the leading causes of infertility worldwide.
Symptoms of Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea is one of the so-called "silent" diseases: in up to 90% of cases it is asymptomatic. Therefore, if you have had unprotected or risky sex, it is always advisable to get tested for gonorrhea in your throat, urethra, and rectum.
In men, the most common ones are:

Gonorrhea Treatment
Like any other bacterial infection, it's treated with a combination of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory measures. Occasionally, this bacteria can develop resistance to certain antibiotics; if this is the case, a culture will be performed to determine the appropriate antibiotic. It is always recommended to follow up to verify that the disease has been completely eradicated.
