Surgical abortion is a minor outpatient procedure that allows you to go home the same day. There are two types of surgical abortion:

Surgical abortion by aspiration

You will be at the abortion clinic in Girona for between 1.30 minutes and 2 hours.

The procedure lasts 5 to 7 minutes and consists primarily of gently suctioning to remove the pregnancy. After the procedure, the patient should rest in the recovery area for 30 to 45 minutes.

During the procedure, the doctor will examine the position of your uterus and insert a speculum into your vagina to clean the area. A few stitches of local anesthetic will be injected into your cervix to numb the area, and your cervix will be gently dilated using thin rods called dilators. You will experience heavy but brief bleeding, as the procedure only lasts 5 to 7 minutes.

Once the procedure is complete, the nurse will accompany you to your room, where you will be supervised at all times by highly qualified staff until you are 100% recovered.

Surgical abortion by dilation and evacuation

The length of stay at the clinic is 4 to 6 hours.

For this procedure, you may need cervical preparation on the day of or the day before the surgery. The procedure involves using instruments and suction to remove the pregnancy while you are sedated.

Our nursing staff will take you to your room, provide you with a gown, and collect some necessary information. The anesthesiologist will then meet with you and you will need to answer their questions while they insert an IV line into your arm. Once the IV is in place, sedation will be administered through the line to put you to sleep.

Once the sedation takes effect, your legs will be placed in the gynecological position. The doctor will then examine your uterus and insert a speculum to clean the area with iodine. Afterward, the doctor will dilate your cervix and remove the pregnancy using a narrow clamp through the cervix.

Next, a sterile plastic tube will be inserted through your cervix, and the entire area will be gently suctioned to complete the evacuation. You will feel nothing during the entire procedure (which lasts between 15 and 17 minutes). You will wake up in the recovery area and, after 3 or 4 hours, you will be able to go home.
